Mazda’s Advanced Safety Features for Winter Driving |
Posted: March 11, 2019 |
Winter in Canada may not be the most fun time to drive a car, but we all still have places to get to and it’s important we arrive there safely. Aside from standard seasonal modifications that can be made to all cars, like switching your regular bald tires to snow tires, the cars Mazda builds today feature stunning new technology which makes driving in adverse conditions safer than ever before. Let’s take a look at the new safety features in Mazda cars that make winter roads safer for everybody. i-ACTIVSENSE Technology Mazda’s i-ACTIVESENSE Technology is the company’s most modern and advanced safety technology. It essentially gives the car instincts to sense what is immediately surrounding it, and the power to react accordingly. i-ACTIV AWD constantly monitors road conditions at a rate of 200 times per second. Cars with this technology can sense how much torque is needed to turn the wheels of the car, and on this basis can tell if the roads are wet or snowy. Then, it can add torque to the rear wheels, when the car needs a boost. There is a range of other i-ACTIVESENSE features that give the driver greater awareness of what is happening on the road. The car alerts the driver when the car appears to be unintentionally moving out of its lane, or when another car is in its blind spot. The car itself is able to sense and respond to nighttime lighting conditions, which is handy during twilight in winter when the sun sets early. It can also sense the proximity to other vehicles, which is important when cars may slide in icy conditions. This i-ACTIVSENSE technology also helps drivers recognize hazards so they can be avoided, and helps reduce the impact of accidents when avoiding them is altogether impossible. For example, Mazda’s patented Smart Brake Support can detect vehicles and obstacles as far as 200 metres away, and if it senses a collision is imminent it will slow the car down by applying the brake. This is a great feature to have in any weather, but especially when roads are slippery or a sudden storm creates poor visibility. SKYACTIV Driving System SKYACTIV embodies Mazda’s attempts to create a truly integrated engine and powertrain. It is the source of what makes Mazda cars feel so connected to the road. This feature needs to be felt more than explained. It’s the reason why Mazdas are fun to drive, but it also makes it much easier to stay safe in winter, when the importance of smooth handling and firm control of the car takes on added importance. SKYACTIV technology can be found in the Mazda 6, as well as the CX-5 crossover SUV and the CX-9 SUV. The world doesn’t just stop because the weather is bad, and Mazda makes driving during the Canadian winter as safe as possible. Whether it’s the SKYACTIV handling or any of the advanced i-ACTIVSENSE features, you’ll be glad you’re driving a Mazda this winter.
