‘Shipping’ Your Life Abroad |
Posted: October 22, 2018 |
There are many moments in our lives which define us; not least of which are big moves. For some more adventurous people, one of their big moves may involve going abroad. While this act is a form of moving, there are some critical differences which makes it more significant. If you plan to move across the ocean or to another continent, you require an alternative mindset than if you just went to another neighbourhood, city or province. In many ways, moving abroad should be approached like how us shipping companies do it. Our Viamar Scilla team doesn’t have all the answers, but we do have experience transplanting meaningful possessions of our clients to over 250 destinations all over the world.
Clear the paperwork to clear your stress One of the most infuriating things about moving to another country (or even just visiting in some cases) is all the paperwork it requires. There’s lots of certifications and bureaucracy that require your attention and signature. The trick to not panicking is to take care of as much of it as early as possible. This includes things like leasing agreements, passport verifications and even metro cards. Expatinfodesk.com has this excellent and exhaustive checklist that you should go through. The items on the list are split into what you need to worry about 90 days, 60 days, 30 days, and immediately before departure. Be sure to check it out! Take a little piece of home with you One of the most stressful things about moving to a different country (after the paperwork that is), is the culture shock. What once seemed mundane and routine may now appear strange and alien. Even ways in which people greet or address each other may take you some time to learn in this new environment. While you’re teaching yourself the customs of your new home country, it is important that you create a space that anchors you to who you are and where you’ve been. For many shipping companies, us included, the little bit of home we bring with us are our standards. As corny as it may sound, where customers can find us may depend on the location but what they can expect from us doesn’t. What we recommend is that you bring with you something that you feel defines your personality. It can be a favourite item of clothing, furniture, or even vehicle. Having it be important to you is all that matters. And hey, if it’s a big item (like furniture or a car), there are companies that can accommodate you, like us! Taking time to take it all in With all the big stuff out of way, it’s important for you to take a moment and congratulate yourself. This is a huge occasion. You are about to accomplish something special, few people ever move outside of their home country. Even with all the trips around the world we do, we still take the time after a job well done to let that victory sink in. So should you! Remember, moving abroad is different from just moving and requires a different mindset. Think of the occasion like us shippers would, you are after all effectively ‘shipping’ your life abroad so treat it as such. You need to be tactical with your decisions and preparations to ensure a smooth move. Don’t forget that you don’t have to it alone. We can help you out either by transporting your goods to ensure they arrive safely at your destination or by providing general advice. Give us a call and we’ll see what we can do to help.
