It's Time to Spring Clean Your Garage |
Posted: March 12, 2020 |
The snow is melting, and it’s time to pull on your rubber gloves, grab your mop and start your official spring clean. Once you manage to get through your house, you should go one-step further — technically, several steps further. You should take the time to tidy-up your garage. It’s been piling up with junk and dust for ages, and this year is the year that you’re going to make it shine again. Read ahead to find out how to empty out, clean and organize this often-neglected space.
Get Rid of Junk! Before you can pull out your sponges and heavy-duty soaps, you need to do some decluttering. The garage has become more of a jam-packed storage unit than a safe parking space. There are boxes stacked against the wall. Old appliances are sitting in the corner, collecting dust. So, the first thing that you need to do is purge the non-essential pieces. If the items are gently-used, consider putting them off to the side and donating them to charities. If the items are mostly damaged, rent a disposal bin and chuck them inside for easy removal. If most of the items are made of ferrous metal, you should bring them over to the scrap metal recycling facility Canada Iron so that they can dispose of them properly. These are some of the ferrous metal items that you can bring:
Not only is this an environmentally-friendly move, but it’s also a rewarding one too. You will be compensated for the value of your contributions. A big haul could make your spring-cleaning experience much more exciting.
Scrub, Scrub, Scrub!Start by moving the items outside of the garage so that you have a clear space to work with. You’ll want to scrub the floors, the walls and the little forgotten corners. Use a combination of warm water and bleach to keep mould and mildew at bay. If you don’t like the harsh chemical smell of some cleaners, you can make DIY eco-friendly cleaners out of everyday items like white vinegar. Add splashes of essential oils to your homemade cleaners so that the space smells nice and refreshed.
Get Organized! The next thing that you have to do is get organized. You don’t want to go back to clutter all over again. The great Martha Stewart recommends hanging garage items on walls using pegboards to keep everything organized. You can do it with bicycles, rakes, shovels, brooms, garden hoses and more. The vertical storage will give you more floor space and make the room look neater. Instead of packing items in boxes and putting them into corners, install shelving units. It will keep stuff off of the floor and away from the car. And all of those boxes should be labelled. Write down everything that’s inside of the box. This way, you won’t panic whenever you’re searching for camping gear, gardening tools or holiday decorations. You’ll be so shocked by what your garage looks like after a thorough clean. There’s no more junk. No more clutter. Just clear, functional space.
