Innovative Ways to Learn a Foreign Language |
Posted: December 12, 2016 |
Learning a new language is a major challenge, but it can be a lot of fun. You can learn how to communicate with people from another culture whether for work or for friendship. However, this is a project you must spend some time and effort on. To make it more enjoyable and to help you learn faster, you can employ some creative ideas. Here are some fun suggestions.
Find Native Speakers in Your Hometown
If you’re taking language classes in Toronto or another large city, you’ll probably have no problem finding people who speak the language you’re learning. You can attend events and activities where people attend. Get to know them and develop a friendship as well as learning how real people speak the dialect you’re studying.
Find a Pen Pal
Even in the modern age, you can find old-fashioned pen pals who want to write real letters. Or if you prefer a modern email, you can find email pals as well. Choose someone in a country which speaks the language you’re learning. For instance, if you want to learn to speak French, find a French pen pal who will write their letters in French. This allows you to practice reading the different language with no one to help you translate.
Watch Movies
Pick a movie in a foreign language to practice listening to the different phrases. While you can change your settings to choose a different language for any movie, you’ll benefit more from a movie originally filmed from another country. Not only will you learn the language, but you’ll learn more about the culture and the context of the conversations.
Use Labels
Use post-it notes or other adhesive labels and write the names of items as you attach them. For instance, write out the French word for cup and stick it to a cup in your cabinet. Go through the house and mark items to help you remember the correct translation. This helps you with your language learning classes as you practice outside of the classroom.
Don’t Be Afraid to Practice
Be willing to get out of your comfort zone and practice your new language. Go to events, talk to people who are native speakers. You can even chat online if you don’t know anyone in your area who speaks the language you’re learning. Many people are afraid of being misunderstood and making mistakes so they never speak until they are perfect. However, the only way to become perfect – or at least close, is through practice.
Plan a Visit
Plan a trip to someplace where you’re new language is spoken. This allows you to set a deadline so you can be motivated to work harder at learning a language. You will also learn more about the language as you schedule hotels, airfare and other details. Mentally translate everything into your new language, so you can begin to understand the correct terms for airline, hotel, restaurant and other places where you will be going.
Learning a language doesn’t have to be all about classwork, even though language courses are valuable. You can find fun and unique ways to help you master a new language.
