Learn a New Language: Tips for Traveling in a Foreign Country |
Posted: December 13, 2016 |
If you like to travel, there’s a chance you will end up in a country where you either don’t speak the language or you don’t speak it fluently. Struggling to communicate can spell disaster for a trip, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Follow these tips to help you enjoy your journey whether you learn a new language or not.
1. Learn Basic Phrases
Once you know you’re going to be traveling to a place where English is not the primary language, take the time to learn some basic phrases. You can often download these phrases from the internet for free or use a pocket translator in whatever language you need to learn. Here are a few popular phrases every traveler should know.
You may have other phrases you want to add to this list to ensure you can get basic information across to the person and have your most important needs met.
Pay Attention to Actions and Behaviors
Even if you’re among people who are speaking a language you don’t understand, you can get an idea of what’s going on by noticing their behaviors. Are they in a hurry? Maybe there’s an emergency. Are they smiling or looking angry? Are they motioning for you to hurry?
You can even communicate with retailers in shops and servers in restaurants by using body language. If you can point at what you want on a shelf or on the menu, the person is likely to know what you mean. If you hold out money, they will understand you want to buy something or know how much it costs. Just make sure you’re aware if any gestures are offensive or not allowed in certain countries.
Learn a New Language
Whether you wish to learn to speak French or another language, it can be beneficial to find language courses in Toronto or where you live. While the classes may take a few weeks or months before you are able to communicate, it will help you manage your way in areas where English isn’t spoken or at least not as widely as at home.
A second benefit of learning a new language is that you will be able to read information around you. You can read street signs, store signs, newspapers and other printed material that may help you navigate or get information you need.
Taking the time to learn a new language through language classes, and paying attention to how people act will help you manage your way in any new city. The more effort you put into learning about where you’re traveling, the more you will enjoy the trip.
