What You Need to Know about Becoming a Translator |
Posted: January 27, 2017 |
If you love learning new languages or have taken a language class in Toronto, you may think that a career as a translator sounds perfect. Even if you haven’t learned a new language yet, the idea of traveling to other countries as a translator may appeal. The first step is to understand what it takes to be a translator.
Learn the Language
This step sounds rather obvious, and it is. However, the level at which you must be able to speak in another language goes beyond being fluent. You must be able to speak at an advanced level, as well as have the ability to read, write and understand others as if you were a native speaker. Before you get discouraged thinking you aren’t at that level, you can work towards it by continuing to take more advanced language courses and by practicing it whenever you get the chance.
Get Certified
Learning the language isn’t enough. You must also get accredited, which proves that you have the necessary skills to translate for others. You may need to get an advanced degree. Translator organizations will provide numerous benefits if you are a member. Once you are certified and a member of an organization, you may find it easier to get jobs in your new profession. At the very least, it helps if you can mention your credentials and affiliations on your resume.
Get Experience
You’ll find it easier to get jobs as a translator once you’ve had experience. You may have to start out in entry-level jobs or working in a job where you deal with people from another nationality. For instance, you may work in a retail store where a lot of people speak French. As you communicate with them in their language, you can add that experience to your resume. You may also find translation internships at universities, working with different departments. You may be able to translate documents, which will provide another level of experience.
Take Tests
You will find proficiency tests that you can show to people who are interested in hiring you. These tests show how well you can speak, read and write in another language. Translator organizations may offer these tests or provide information on special tests.
Continue to Learn
One important aspect of developing your reputation as a translator is to continue to take language classes and learn more about translation. You may be able to specialize in a certain area such as medical interpreter, which will require you to take more classes which focus on the terms specific to the industry.
Research the industry you are most interested in working in and learn all you can about jobs in those areas. Develop your skills and follow companies that hire translators on social media. As you build your resume specifically for those jobs, you will find that you stand out against the competition. Becoming a translator is a challenging career choice, but it is also exciting for those who love language and the opportunities that come with this job.
