Try Not to Get Carried Away with Spring Fever |
Posted: April 23, 2019 |
It’s that time of year again: the snow is melting away and the sun is beginning to make itself known again. Birds are chirping and there’s freshness in the air that you haven’t smelled in months. That’s right, it’s spring, and during this time it’s not uncommon to catch a little case of Spring Fever. And while all that extra energy can be great, that feeling of restlessness and excitement can often make you push your body a little further than you’d like. Especially when it comes to spring cleaning – heavy lifting, constant bending, and just generally putting strain on your body when you haven’t in months can cause you injuries that you weren’t expecting.
In the Garden One of the places that many people start their spring cleaning is in their garden. This is because it’s often necessary to prep a garden in the early spring so that whatever you’ve planted has space to grow and flourish. And there’s often a lot to do: clearing debris, getting rid of dead plants and planting new ones, fertilizing the earth, etc. While perhaps therapeutic, this kind of activity can really put a strain on your back, especially if you are bending forward a lot. Sustained forward bending puts a ton of pressure on your lower back and can cause painful swelling. To avoid this, kneel instead on a cushion or use a stool. If not possible, make sure you are standing up every 10 to 15 minutes in order to return your back to a healthier position. In the Home You think it is bad outside? What about inside your home? The windows have been shuttered all winter long – it’s gotten stuffy, dusty, and you’ve just plain neglected it. Not to mention there’s a load of clutter you’d like to get rid of. It’s an exciting time, with so many ideas flying around, and you might not even know where to start. But just like with your garden, be sure to not get carried away in your home, either. Heavy lifting, bending, twisting, and unfamiliar neck movements can all lead to body aches and pains that you don’t want – especially when you’re just getting your energy back! The key, like most things in life, is moderation. Be sure to ease your way back into physical activity and not try to do too much in one day. Some other key points to remember are to make sure that you are warming up by doing some stretches before starting your major cleaning, take frequent breaks during, and stay hydrated all throughout. With these tips you’ll avoid unnecessary strain on your body and help it ease its way back out of hibernation. Remember, if you injure yourself, you’ll be out of commission for even longer – and there’ll be no way to cure that Spring Fever.
